Privacy
Last updated: September 30, 2026. This page explains, in plain words, what we keep and why. It is not legal advice; the terms of service are at /terms.html.
Who is who
The family is the person who signs up and pays, and the readers they invite. The storyteller is the parent or grandparent we call. The storyteller agrees on the first call, in their own words, before anything is recorded.
What we keep
- From the family: names, email addresses, the storyteller's name and phone number, the call schedule, starter facts you typed, your questions, photos you upload, the book's text, and a shipping address for printed books. We also keep the words you confirmed when you said the storyteller agreed to the calls.
- From each call: the audio recording, a written transcript, the chapter written from it, and short notes the interviewer uses to remember the story (names, places, what to ask next time).
- Consent records: the storyteller's yes (or no) on the first call, and any "stop calling" request.
What we never keep
- The interviewer never asks for money, bank or card numbers, Social Security numbers, passwords, PINs, a home address, or medical details. If a storyteller says a number that looks like a card, account or Social Security number, we remove it from the transcript and delete the recording of that call.
- Chapters leave out the storyteller's current health, medicines and diagnoses.
- We do not make voiceprints, clone voices, or use recordings to train AI models.
- We do not sell or rent any information, and we show no ads.
How it is protected
- Recordings, photos and book files are encrypted with a key that belongs to your family alone. When you delete everything, that key is destroyed, so any copy left anywhere is unreadable.
- Only people the account owner invites can see the family page. Sign-in is by emailed link; there are no passwords to steal.
- Audio and photo links on the family page expire after 30 minutes.
Who helps us (and sees what)
- Cloudflare runs our website and stores our data (encrypted).
- Retell AI places the phone calls and produces the transcript. We copy each recording to our own encrypted storage and then ask Retell to delete its copy.
- Anthropic (Claude) writes each chapter from the transcript. Anthropic does not use API data to train its models.
- Resend sends our emails. Stripe handles payments; we never see card numbers. Lulu prints and ships books and receives the book file and your shipping address.
How long we keep it
- Everything stays until you delete it, or until 12 months after your plan ends, when we email you, then delete it.
- Shipping addresses are removed 90 days after a book is delivered.
- If a storyteller asks us to stop calling, we keep one scrambled (hashed) copy of the phone number, so we never call it again, even if the account is deleted.
Your choices
- Delete everything: one button on the family page (Settings) deletes every chapter, recording, photo, question and book file, right away.
- Hide a chapter from the book, pause the calls, or stop the weekly email (one click in any email) at any time.
- The storyteller can say "stop calling" on any call, and the calls stop for good.
- Email support@nowthatyouask.com for a copy of your data or any question. California, Colorado, Virginia and other state residents have the right to know, correct and delete their personal information; we honor those requests for everyone.
Children
Now That You Ask is for adults. We do not knowingly call anyone under 18 or collect information from children.
